Local restaurants recruit top chefs from around the world to ensure that the meal experience is a superior one. However, one need not stray from the golf course to find a heightened dining experience.

The Resort at Squaw Creek offers three elegant restaurants: Glissandi for contemporary California cuisine; Ristorante Montagna, an upscale Italian bistro; and casual family dining at Cascades.

Elite, grill-style dining is available at The Lodge at Whitehawk Ranch. Chef Michael Raine offers a fabulous all-inclusive menu that includes pork loin with apple cider sauce, pan-seared Northwest salmon and a grilled New York Steak.

Whitewater excitement

Even beyond the many golf choices, Reno-Lake Tahoe is fast becoming America’s place for outdoor adventure. Here are several things to check off your “Things To Do Before I Die” list during your High Sierra golf vacation:

Experience the Tahoe Rim Trail
This 165-mile trail along the ridges of Lake Tahoe offers breathtaking vistas of the lake, from a number of easily accessed trailheads. The 24-inch, single-track trail crosses six counties and two states. It is open to hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.

Visit the Truckee River Whitewater Park and Kayak Course
The whitewater course is a total of 2,600 feet long, rated a class 2 to 3 for difficulty, and includes north and south channels that surround a city park on an island in the river. The $1.5 million course is destined to be a national treasure. Call 800-367-7366 for information.

Mountain Bike Peavine Peak and Steamboat Ditch
Mountain bikers and fat-tire enthusiasts can test their lungs on these single-tracks. Peavine is a 8.266-foot peak that hugs Reno’s northern border, while Steamboat is a flat, unpaved trail snaking nearly 40 miles to the foothills of the Mt. Rose Highway south of Reno. Call 775-826-8258 for information.

Hike the Bizz Johnson Trail
This trail winds 25.4 miles along the old Fernley and Lassen Branches of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It offers tremendous fall foliage and viewing opportunities.

Mountain Bike the Flume Trail
Starting at the day use area in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park off Rte. 28, the Flume Trail offers unparalleled views of Lake Tahoe. Options include five- and 13-mile ridge-top rides. Call 775-747-1413 for information

Ski and Golf in the Same Day
There is nothing like Sierra snow in the springtime. The combination of Lake Tahoe’s 6,220-foot elevation and the area’s low humidity creates light and dry snow. For seven of the last eight ski seasons, Lake Tahoe has featured the nation’s deepest snowpack (typically an average of 36 feet of snow). The region boasts 18 spectacular ski areas.
